Miss Willow Wigglesworth

Introducing my first guest blogger… Miss Willow Wigglesworth, the German Shorthaired Pointer… she had so much to say about her first weekend at our house, that I thought it was better directly from the puppy’s mouth!!

Halllooo Hoomans! I am just a puppy, so I don’t have a lot of words, but I will tell you all the words I know so far, ok??

The ball

My most favorite thing is called “the ball.” I love the ball. It moves EVERY time I touch it! I take it with me places just in case I need it. Also for naps. The ball likes naps.

The brothers

There are two other puppies in my new house. They are called “the brothers.” One brother is shorter, and he is also called, “Jake, leave the puppy alone.” The other brother is taller, and he is also called, “Cole, stop worrying about the puppy.” I love them. They play the best games.

The mom – she calls me Miss Wigglesworth

There is a medium sized hooman in my house who loves me the most. She is called “the mom.” She does not stay still very much, so I have to go with her lots of places. She likes it if I am right behind her, so I make sure that I always am. I think she needs me like that.

The dad

There is a very big hooman in my new house too. He is called “the dad.” I think he needs to be cuddled more because sometimes he talks in a loud voice – especially when I help him with his work. His work must be hard. I tried to help him by bringing the little noise makers that fit in his ears to him, but maybe he didn’t need them anymore because he put them in the nice smelling bin in the kitchen. I’ll keep trying to help him though.

The car

We do a lot of things in my new house. The brothers have to go to a place called “school.” I don’t know why we need to leave them there all day. It makes me so sad to say good bye to them. Why don’t they let puppies go to the school? The brothers would like it. I would like it. I will keep trying to go to the school. We have to go in “the car” to take the brothers places. I like the car, but I don’t know why I need “the seatbelt.” It makes me stay stuck. I don’t like being stuck. I will chew it. That will make it unstuck.

The bath

When I first got to my new house, they told me I needed “the bath.” I think I like the wet stuff that is in the bath. I like to put my feet and my nose in it. But, I don’t like how noisy it is when it falls out of the wall! Why is it so noisy?? I would like to have the bath with the mom. She puts fluffy wet stuff in the bath and it’s good to bite. I don’t know why she doesn’t bite it?? I will keep biting it for her until she learns to do the bath better.

The dog cousins

It was called “turkey weekend” at my new house when I got there. On turkey weekend, A LOT of other hoomans and other puppies meet at a big house with my hoomans. They are very noisy. The other puppies are called my “dog cousins.” I am the puppiest, so I try to play their games, but sometimes I don’t understand. The biggest one yells at me sometimes. I will try not to upset him!

My puffy coat and my flying toy

It is very cold where I live. When we went to the party for turkey weekend I wanted to play with the dog cousins, but I was shivering so another hooman (called Auntie) gave me a puffy coat! I LOVE it! It makes me go faster and I am much stronger when I wear it. Really, I am. I can catch my flying toy even better when I wear it. I really can.

The other dog

There is one stranger in my new house. The mom also calls it Miss Wigglesworth and the brothers laugh at it whenever I try to say hello! I will keep trying to be friendly, but it is not going so well. That stranger never gets close enough for a proper hello!

The walk

Even though my favorite thing is the ball, there is also something called “the walk.” The walk happens every day and sometimes we go in the car to the walk. When we go in the car, we do the walk with other puppies! The walk is my other favorite thing. It’s especially good because I can take the ball on the walk!

The snuggles

The mom and the dad say I am a busy puppy. I don’t know what “busy” is, but when it gets dark outside and I am done playing with the brothers and the ball and the walk and the car and the flying toy, I am tired. Then we do “the snuggles.” I love the snuggles. I feel warm and safe and HOME when we do the snuggles. The dad gives good snuggles because his arms hold me all over. The mom says I might get too big for her snuggles – I think that’s the silliest thing I ever heard her say!

So, that’s it. That’s all my new words. I think there are lots more to learn. Maybe I’ll tell you more next time.

So there you go… from the puppy’s mouth! From our house to yours, I hope you have some snuggles of your own this week!

Dog Person

I am a dog person. I like other critters too… even cats ;). Horses, goats, donkeys, birds… pretty much all critters.

But, I am a dog person. As in, I’ve always had a dog… well, almost always, except for the past 7 months.

It has been exactly 7 months since we said good bye to arguably the best dog that ever was. I’ve had a couple of great dogs, but Samwise Gamgee, the Border Terrier – not to be confused with the hobbit – was the Best. Dog. Ever.

Happy 17th Birthday Sam!

Although not a hobbit, our Sam was hobbit-like in all the ways that count…

… They are a little people… There is no magic about them, except the ordinary everyday sort… their feet grow natural leathery soles and thick warm brown hair like the stuff on their heads (which is curly)… have good natured faces, and laugh deep fruity laughs (especially after dinner, which they have twice a day when they can get it)…

J.R.R Tolkien, The Hobbit, Chapter I, An Unexpected Party.

Well, I didn’t actually ever hear Sam laugh, but he laughed with his smile and his eyes so many times a day that I imagined it was fruity and deep. I really loved his laugh.

So, it has taken all of these 7 months for me to be ready to post this pic of our boy, taken only a month before he passed. He was mostly blind and completely deaf by this time, but he still smiled and laughed all the time. He wanted us to be happy – that was his mission – and he carried out that mission with determination until the very end when he just could not smile anymore, which was how we knew that it was time to say good bye.

So, as we begin to get ready to prepare our home for a new four legged addition (stay tuned for how soon and who…), I am almost giddy with excitement, but on the other hand, I am nervous! I am nervous because for 17 years my best buddy was just The. Best. I’m not sure my heart can handle a new best buddy… I wonder if that makes me strange?

I’m praying that our newest 4-legged family member will fill a spot in our home that only he (or she!) can, and that we will have many new adventures together… and maybe, just maybe, our new little friend will know how to laugh. Wouldn’t that be something?
